Don’t throw a 1

You need a die, a pad of paper, and a pencil. Then you’re ready to start. The players take turns throwing the die. Each player can throw as many times as they want and collect points (= number on the die). But if they throw a 1, they lose all their points for this round, and the next player is up. This means they need to consider carefully whether they should dare to take another throw, or if they should keep all the points they’ve collected and pass on the die. Whoever has the most points after the set number of rounds, or whoever reaches the set number of points first, wins.

Popping balloons

After each child has a balloon tied to their ankle, the game can start. Now the children have to try and use their feet to pop the other children’s balloons. The one who keeps their balloon the longest wins the game.

Big clocks go tick-tock, tick-tock (slow tick-tock), little clocks go tick-tock, tick-tock (somewhat faster tick-tock), and little pocket watches go tick-tock, tick-tock (very fast tick-tock). And cuckoo clocks go cuckoo cuckoo (bounce the child on your knees), and the church bells go ding-dong, ding-dong (slow, long back and forth), and the alarm clock goes ... rrrrrrrrring (tickle child)

Best game ideas

Remembering things

Place 25 objects on a table. One child gets 1 minute of time to commit everything to memory. How much did they remember? Everyone takes turns being “it,” and everything is set up in a different order each time: Who can remember the most objects? Alternative for a child’s birthday: The child gets to keep everything on the table that they remembered. The gifts could be pencils, erasers, marbles, or candy, for instance.

Guessing jobs

First, name one player as the “game master.” This child thinks of a job, but doesn’t tell anyone. The team has to guess the job by taking turns asking the game master questions. The game master can only answer these questions with “yes” or “no.” Once someone guesses the job, their team wins the round.

Do the opposite

Note: Whoever does something wrong is out. One child is the “leader,” and everybody else has to pay close attention. They’re not allowed to do what the leader does; instead, they have to do exactly the opposite. Example: If the “leader” puts their arms up, the other children have to reach down toward the floor. If they laugh, the other children have to cry.

We added a new topic to the site: Game apps for smartphones, tablets or also the computer.
The app market has grown considerably in the last years and there are a lot of apps specifically aimed at younger children.
They are designed to have fun but often also focus on promoting skill and competence.
Of course, everyone has to decide for oneself whether this is the right thing for kids.
With the plethora of apps now available we want to help interested parents to find those that stand out.
